The time on the Shakti Mat is your time for Rest, Relaxation and Meditation.
A time to slow down and let go of your everyday cares and concerns. A time of Deep Relaxation.
As you lie on the mat, breathe in a relaxed and deep manner, allowing both body and mind to become still. You can use this time for Meditation, Affirmations or Visualisation. This will further enhance your experience of using the Shakti Mat.
You may have a favourite practice or meditation that you can use or you can try some of the following:

OM MANI PADME HUM – Mantra of the Buddha of Compassion
- OM seed syllable of Buddha Body. The Universe.
- MANI Jewel; symbolizes the fulfillment of wishes.
- PADME lotus (pureness)
- HUM Union, invoking or uniting.
Simple meaning: “O Buddha who holds jewel and lotus (compassion and wisdom), please bestow your blessings upon us.” This mantra is used to unite heart and mind.
Allow yourself to get comfortable on the mat.
Take a few deep breaths.
Let go and relax on each exhalation.
Allow the breath to settle down into a relaxed steady rythm.
Repeat the Mantra in your mind.
Swami Satyananda Saraswati writes in ‘Meditation from the Tantras’: “A mantra is a grouping of sound vibrations which have an effect on the mental and psychic consciousness of man.”
In ‘Meditation Advice for Beginners’ Bokar Rinpoche writes: “Mantras are short sacred recitations, the repetition of which helps the mind purify itself and develop its potential for Awakening”.
Sri Swami Satyananda writes in ‘The Yoga Sutra’s of Patanjali – Translation and Commentary’ (1:28): “The meaning of mantram is ‘that which keeps the mind steady and produces the proper effect’.”
By systematically working with mantras our mind becomes clearer and our awareness increases of both who we are and also our awareness of others. We start to see things in new ways. With prolonged practice the mind becomes very still and this is said to be the beginning of true knowledge. There should be a feeling that the mantra comes from within and the practitioner should be an unconcerned observer of any thoughts appearing during practice (which they will!).
